Wall calendars and paper planners are out; agendas that fit in the palm of your hand are in. Calendar apps are not only less clunky than traditional means of scheduling, they also offer loads of features to keep you on task and on time.

If you head over to the app store on your mobile device and type in “calendar,” you’re going to come up with a lot of results. In fact, I just tried it, and my phone gave me 2,199 options — eek. You could spend all day going through each app one by one, but if you want to maintain your sanity, you should probably just take our advice and try one of the calendar apps below. These are some of the best of the best, the crème de la crème, and after finding your favorite you may wish you had more commitments to fill it up (may I suggest yoga?)

Without further adieu, here are 4 of the best free calendar apps for your mobile device.

Tempo

Platforms: iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch

Cost: Free!

Tempo

Tempo has five distinct calendar views

Tempo is more than just a calendar app. Sure, it allows you to view your schedule in day, week, and month views (as well as special “agenda” and “list” views), but it’s also like having a little robot in your pocket. The app uses artificial intelligence to save you time by accessing your social networks, e-mails, and more for useful information. For example, if you put the name of a meeting’s venue in the title of the event, Tempo will look up the address for you and offer directions, parking suggestions, and estimated drive time.

Tempo also lets you see calendar conflicts as you type in a new event (no double-booking!), join conference calls without dialing passcodes, send birthday wishes and gifts to contacts in one tap, and more. Users call it “uniquely awesome” and “superb and simple to use.”

Sunrise

Platforms: iPhone, iPad, Android, and Desktop

Cost: Free!

Lovingly designed

“Designed with love, Sunrise is a new experience that will make your life easier,” boasts the app’s description in the iTunes store. And indeed, Sunrise’s beautiful design does make you feel the people behind the scenes really had their heart in the project. Outside of its goods looks, Sunrise also sports some impressive features. It’s a great choice for multi-device users as it seamlessly synchronizes content and events (from Facebook, iCloud, Evernote, Google Calendar, etc.) in real time, and the ability to drag-and-drop tasks and appointments makes rescheduling a breeze.

What else? Sunrise lets you create events super fast, tag locations to events, see the faces and profiles of meeting attendees before you meet them (thanks to LinkedIn), and more. Users call it “fantastic!” and their “favorite calendar app so far.”

Agenday

Platforms: iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android

Cost: Free!

Agenday

Now with integrated Salesforce

The Agenday app has a clean, simple design that lets you see all of your commitments in one place. From one easy-on-the-eyes screen, you can look at upcoming meetings, view alerts and notifications, join conference calls and web meetings (with one touch!), message meeting attendees, and more. Like some other calendar apps, it also pulls useful information from e-mails and calendars and places them into events, so you don’t have to sweat the details.

Agendy has also recently integrated Salesforce, allowing users to log sales calls and add contacts directly to their Salesforce account through the app — for free.

Users say that Agenday is a “great way to stay organized” and an “absolutely awesome app.”

Cozi

Platforms: iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Android

Cost: Free!

Cozi

A shared app for the whole family

Most of us have responsibilities that extend beyond the office walls. Cozi is a family organizer that helps you stay on track while sharing appointments and lists with your family members. The fact that Cozi is shared is one of its most valuable features; if you add something to the grocery list, your spouse will see it too. Same goes for items on the calendar, to-do list entries, and updates to the family journal (where you can post special moments or things you don’t want to forget).

In addition to being accessible on your mobile device, you can also log in to your account through the Cozi website. And one of the coolest features? You can send an agenda for the upcoming week to any family member via e-mail, so you’re all on the same page.

This app has received incredible praise. The TODAY Show called it a “must-have app for a better life” and PC World said that “Cozi is, in short, ridiculously handy. My only regret is that I waited this long to start using it.”
