About this workshop

Excel is an essential tool for anyone trying to understand data. It’s extremely powerful, ubiquitous, and simple to use. This class will introduce you to some of the more advanced topics in Excel and give you an abundance of tips, tricks, and ideas to take your Excel skills to the next level. Anyone who has some basic experience with Excel and wants to improve their skills will benefit from attending.

Takeaways

  • Start importing, cleansing, and manipulating your data quickly and efficiently.
  • Use statistical functions and pivot tables to unlock the meaning of a dataset.
  • Create fully customised charts, dashboards, and other visualisations.
  • Build accurate, robust models that are simple to understand.

Prereqs & Preparation

Students should have a basic understanding of Excel and rudimentary functions (IF, SUMIF, SUM, and VLOOKUP statements) as well as how to organize data into functional tables (i.e. how to create a data table in Excel with a simple understanding of sort and filter functionality).

Students should bring a laptop with Excel 2010 installed. PC-based laptops are preferable, though not required (certain shortcuts may not transfer directly into Excel for Mac).

We will endeavour to make the class OS agnostic, but users of the Mac version may notice some differences. Students will also need to download TBC data and read the TBC short case studies, we’ll use these in our demos.
