    Sarah Barnett

Public Affairs Adviser and Special Assistant to the President and CEO, Humane Society of the United States

    Washington, D.C.

With a passion for helping animals and people, Sarah’s gained unique perspective and experience both online, managing social media at the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation for many years, and offline, working at an animal shelter and volunteering with several organizations. More recently she has worked in several communication roles at The Humane Society of the United States, with a focus on public relations, social media, crisis communications, and how they overlap. While managing social media for the Humane Society of the United States, she led the organization to be recognized as a leader in the use of twitter for nonprofit engagement, and in industry publications such as the "Top 20 Nonprofits on Twitter" by The Huffington Post. She is now the Public Affairs Adviser and Special Assistant to the President and CEO. In her spare time, she volunteers with Lost Dog and Cat Rescue and serves on the Board of Directors, and is Principal of Social Media for Animals, a website and Facebook group for those who manage social media for shelters and rescues across the country. The group focuses connecting individuals in what are otherwise often isolating roles, sharing resources, best practices and providing support to each other. She lives in Maryland with her dog Dimitri, who is also on Facebook and Instagram.
