Melissa Quintanilha is a passionate designer with over 15 years of industry experience. She has her B.S. in Computer Science from UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and M.F.A. in Interaction Design from The Ohio State University. During her M.F.A., she explored interactivity beyond the screen, embedded into physical objects and environments. Her graduate work was selected to be presented at 3 international conferences in Italy, Denmark and China.
Melissa has worked for 7 years at Microsoft, where she helped define the UX in areas ranging from complex datacenter management, to automotive, to social experiences. Her last years were spent at FUSE Labs, an innovation lab at Microsoft Research. While at FUSE Labs, she organized, promoted, managed and directed the Microsoft Design Expo conference, with the goal of providing the opportunity for fresh insights into current design problems through partnerships with leading design schools around the world. In 2015 and 2016, she served as liaison with the two top design schools in Brazil: ESDI and PUC-Rio. During her career, Melissa has acquired practical user research knowledge, having participated in ethnography and usability studies, focus groups, interviews, card sorts and analysis sessions.
When not designing, Melissa is, well, designing! She is a professional DJ, having played at clubs, music festivals, parties and the radio. Melissa believes that DJing is a great manifestation of UX. She adapts her craft to her “users" (dancers) in real time in order to create the best experience for the occasion.
Currently, she is the co-founder of Dupla Studios (her own design firm) and teaches User Experience Design Immersive courses at General Assembly in Seattle.
