James is the VP of DEI at General Assembly. He has 20+ yrs of experience serving in global organizations, including CDO and VP of Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), where he oversaw all D&I policy and planning across multiple hospitals, health care groups, and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
As a result of his leadership, JHM received the Innovations in Diversity Award from Profiles in Diversity Journal, which also awarded James its Diversity Leader Award. He has further been recognized with the Senior Executive award from NAHSE and the National Diversity Council’s DiversityChampion award.
An expert in providing leadership in areas of strategic alignment, HR, culture, D&I, ethics, government relations, community engagement and cultural change. James served on the Advisory Committee for the CBDF, the Disparities in Healthcare subcommittee, and former PA Governor Ed Rendell’s Workforce Investment Board Leadership Council.
James has a demonstrated ability to successfully collaborate, coach and connect across all level in global and highly matrixed orgs. He has built a distinguished reputation working with some of the most prestigious companies and health systems in the world. His prior work garnered Dell, Inc. the Top Innovator in Global Diversity award, while his groundbreaking programs for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital led to its selection by Diversity, Inc. as one of the nation’s top health systems for diversity.
A gifted public speaker, James has been featured on NPR, as well as in Insights into Diversity, The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, and noted by Becker’s Hospital Review as a diversity officer to know.
