    Glenn Brown

Senior Software Engineer, The Home Depot

    Online

Glenn is a software engineer and educator whose path into tech began far from the keyboard — in the fast‑paced world of restaurant management. Driven by a need for deeper challenge and long‑term growth, he transitioned into software engineering through General Assembly’s in‑person immersive program in Atlanta in 2018. That decision reshaped his career and ultimately brought him full‑circle back to GA. Since graduating, Glenn has worked as a software engineer at The Home Depot, contributing to a wide range of internal applications — from self‑checkout systems to enterprise‑level inventory tools used across thousands of stores. His work spans JavaScript, Java, Python, Go, React, Vue, Express, Spring Boot, and more. Along the way, he’s mentored countless junior engineers, helping them navigate roadblocks and build confidence in real‑world engineering environments.

Glenn returned to GA first as a Teaching Assistant and now as an Instructor Lead, driven by a genuine love for helping others grow. He’s known for breaking down complex concepts with an approachable, ELI5‑style clarity and adapting his teaching to meet students where they are. His philosophy centers on building confidence through repetition, focusing on fundamentals, and encouraging collaboration — the same principles that shaped his own success.

Off the clock, Glenn is a husband, a dad, and the operator of a ferret rescue, where he cares for and rehabilitates animals in need.

    IN CONVERSATION WITH GLENN:

What is your favorite technical skill to work with on your own projects and why?

I love working with React and JavaScript — they’re flexible, expressive, and fun to build with. Python is also a favorite because of how quickly you can turn ideas into working solutions.

What is your favorite technical skill to teach to students and why?

I enjoy teaching problem‑solving itself. Software engineering is a team effort, and helping students understand how to break down challenges is one of the most valuable skills they can learn.

What is most important to you about teaching technical skills at General Assembly?

GA changed my life. Teaching here gives me the opportunity to help others experience that same transformation and open doors they may not have thought possible.

What advice do you have for anyone looking to learn technical skills to reach new career goals?

Always ask questions. Start your day with something like Codewars or another small challenge — consistency builds confidence and skill over time.

What would you like to highlight about your experience in your technical domain outside of teaching?

I’ve built a wide range of applications at The Home Depot, from self‑checkout systems to inventory management tools. I’ve also mentored many junior engineers and helped teams overcome technical roadblocks using tools like JavaScript, Java, Python, Go, React, Vue, Express, and Spring Boot.
