    IN CONVERSATION WITH GINA HATEM:

What is your favorite technical skill to work with on your own projects and why?

User Research. I am both a very empathetic person and a very data driven person. I enjoy understanding human behavior. I enjoy the process of uncovering the wants, needs, and experiences of users, in life and with technology.

What is your favorite technical skill to teach to students and why?

I like teaching Interviewing and Surveying. I think that teaching these skills help students to really build their empathy and curiosity, which are essential to UX Design.

What is most important to you about teaching technical skills at General Assembly?

The most important thing is to be open and receptive to my students; question, concerns, and feedback.

What advice do you have for anyone looking to learn technical skills to reach new career goals?

I would advise three things. 1.) Have a growth mindset. 2.) Be to gentle with yourself while you learn all the technical skills. Somethings take time to really click and for you to grow proficiency in. 3.) Get into the habit of researching; asking questions of your instructors and peers, reading articles and books, watching tutorials, etc.

What would you like to highlight about your experience in your technical domain outside of teaching?

Outside of teaching, I have enjoyed developing a better eye for design and pattern recognition, as well as taking on more managerial positions to see projects through from ideation to completion.
