Brooks is an Austin-based attorney and runs an artist-centric practice focusing on entertainment law, intellectual property, licensing, and small business. Brooks counsels authors, musicians, filmmakers, managers, producers, record labels, websites, small businesses, and various other content creators. His maxim: "don’t get screwed, don’t get sued." Licensed to practice in Texas and California, Brooks also serves as a volunteer board member for Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts to bring legal services to Texas artists who can’t afford it, serves as a council member for the State Bar of Texas’ Entertainment and Sports Law Association, and is an officer with the Austin Bar Association’s Entertainment and Sports Law Association. Brooks has given talks on behalf of the City of Austin, Kerrville Folk Festival, the Staple Independent Media Expo, Blogathon ATX, the Austin Bar Association, Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts, Austin Music Foundation, General Assembly, and the Austin Film Society.
