    About this event

Sign painting, like many hand-crafted arts, is experiencing a resurgence. This return to authenticity is happening across the nation, but the alphabet trade has roots in Los Angeles. Join Los Angeles Is Just My Type and General Assembly in a discussion about the tradition and future of hand painting signs.

Moderator: - Remy Chwae is a lettering artist and sign painter based in LA. After studying illustration and design at Art Center College of Design, she studied at LA Trade Tech and continues to practice a variety of techniques.

    Panelists:

    • Doc Guthrie is a master craftsman and Sign Graphics professor at LA Trade Technical College in downtown LA, the only (and oldest) program that teaches traditional and modern techniques for sign painting, and has been since 1923.

    • Patrick Smith is a sign painter based in Orange, California. For seven years, he painted hundreds of signs at Disneyland. He repaired a phony dentistry sign on Center Street and lettered new ones above Main Street.

    • Dennis Jones, based in Whittier, has been working in custom lettering and pin striping for over 50 years. He lettered his first race car in 1959 and has been painting signs, cars, motorcycles and helmets ever since.

    • Kimberley Edwards is known as the Window Goddess, an artist-turned-sign painter based in Highland Park. She got her start as a window splash artist, but quickly expanded to include a wide variety of sign types.
