About this class

SQL provides powerful but reasonably simple tools for data analysis and handling. This bootcamp will take absolute beginners through the basics of SQL to an ability to write queries with confidence. We will use a combination of lecture and in-class exercises to ensure that students leave with a working grasp of SQL fundamentals necessary for querying popular relational/SQL-based databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL.

Takeaways

  • Understand SQL vocabulary such as tables, schema, functions, and joins
  • Basic SQL syntax with SELECT-FROM-WHERE statements
  • LIMIT clauses
  • ORDER BY clauses
  • Filtering options using WHERE clauses
  • Grouping and Aggregations [MIN, MAX, SUM, AVG, COUNT]

Prereqs & Preparation

This is a beginner class assuming no previous SQL experience. We will be pausing to let students run and write queries of their own, so students should bring laptops. We will use the first 10 minutes of class to install SQLite on laptops for use in class. Students should have permissions to install software on their laptops.
