About this event

Event Overview: Join Girl Code authors Andrea “Andy” Gonzales and Sophie Houser for a discussion on the power of coding and how to break into the tech industry. Get an inside look at their journey from amateur coders to teenage tech phenoms, and how coding can be used as a tool to empower and inspire change. Q&A and book signing to follow the discussion.

Featured Speakers: Andrea “Andy” Gonzales and Sophie Houser are the authors of Girl Code: Gaming, Going Viral, and Getting It Done. They met at a Girls Who Code summer program and teamed up to create Tampon Run, a game designed to combat the social stigma around menstruation. Tampon Run went viral and threw Andy and Sophie into the spotlight of the press, the public, and the tech world. In Girl Code, they provide an inside look at the tech industry, the true power of coding, and some of the amazing women who are shaping the world. Andy currently attends the University of North Carolina as a Robertson Scholar and Sophie attends Brown University. Learn more about them at www.girlcodethebook.com.

What You'll Take Away: Through the success of their video game, Andy and Sophie received unprecedented access to some of the biggest start-ups and tech companies. Now they’re sharing what they’ve seen and how women are taking the tech industry by storm.

Why It Matters: Coding is a language that anyone can learn and can open a world of opportunities. Andy and Sophie’s story reveals not only what they’ve learned about the power of coding within the fields of science and technology, but also the true value of discovering your own voice and creating social change.
