This workshop will help you understand the power of location data and gain useful skills such adding maps to your websites and apps, or enhancing your hackathon projects with location technology.
No previous coding experience is required - anyone is welcome to come along and learn how to work with digital maps.
Bring your laptop and a sense of adventure!
Although Internet will be available during the workshop, please ensure you come prepared in advance. Please complete the following two steps before coming to the venue to ensure we have enough time to complete the tasks.
NOTE: This workshop is suitable for both beginners, and those with more experience.
1. Set up your development environment
In order to participate in this exercise, you will need an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) to be able to code and run your app. There are many options in the market that you can download for free. It’s completely up to you what IDE you’d like to use for this exercise. We recommend Microsoft Visual Studio Code to develop and test your application. It works on all operating systems (including Windows, Mac and Linux) that you may have on your laptop.
You can download and install Visual Studio Code from code.visualstudio.com
If your choice is visual studio code and following the successful installation, you need to set up your local server that when you make changes to your files/code, you can immediately see results on your browser.
There are a few extensions to Visual Studio Code that provide this capability. One of them is called “Live Server”. Please follow the instructions in this video to install the Live Server extension.
2. Create your HERE Developer Account
HERE Technologies provide location APIs and SDKs that you can use to build web and mobile applications that use the power of locations and maps. To be able to use these services in exercise and to build your applications, you need a HERE Developer account. It’s FREE to use (up to 250,000 transactions a month) and there is no need for your credit card details, just a few basic info about you and you’re all set!
To obtain an account, please visit her.is/devs and click on “Sign up” on the top right hand side of the page and follow the steps!
If you had any problems/questions regarding preparation for the workshop, please don’t hesitate to contact the workshop facilitator, Sam at sam.amirebrahimi@here.com
