About This Class

This bootcamp intends to bridge effective data visualization with engaging storytelling. It is composed of two core parts focused on foundational concepts and technical skills, bookended with spaces for introductions and debriefing.

During the first module of the class, we will build up a knowledge base of core concepts that help create effective, engaging, replicable, and sustainable visual communication.

In the second module, we will focus on the technical aspect of the work through hands-on activities and technical demos. We will cover a technical spectrum, dabbling across tools and messing with code whenever possible.

This bootcamp is ideal for entry to mid-level professionals who want or currently have job titles with words like Analyst, Digital, Communications, Fundraising, Insights, Data. The ideal class attendee has at least a few months of hands-on data work. For people who are highly technical (proficient and active in Python, R, GIS, BI tools), the storytelling and effective communication part will provide the most value, while those on business and operations sides will see a lot of value in the extensive technical toolkit and ecosystem of free resources.

College students, small business owners, entrepreneurs, and executive level decision makers would also benefit from participating.

The best place to park is in the structure off of Colorado and 2nd St. The first 90 minutes are free (269 Colorado Ave, Santa Monica, CA 90401).

The end of the Expo Line is the Downtown Santa Monica station, which is a 5-minute walk to campus.

The 733 bus also ends in Santa Monica directly in front of our building.

Data Programs Manager,
City of Los Angeles Office of Finance

As Data Programs Manager at the Office of Finance, I'm tasked with tackling big problems with creative solutions. My role merges data analysis and visualization, storytelling, a wide network of web tools, partnership building, and a wealth of public speaking and project management.

In my former role as the Data Strategist on the Mayor Operations Innovation Team, I played key roles in building LA's portfolio of city-owned real estate, creating a strategic procurement unit for citywide purchasing and enhancing the data framework for workers' comp and risk management. In past lives I've been the social media lead and Latin American biz dev lead at a tech company, the digital director for both a grassroots mayoral campaign and a tech-focused nonprofit, and an ad agency account exec.

During my free time I manage Techtinx, a digital-first nonprofit which builds professional networks and influence for Latinas/os/x in tech. Hit me up on Twitter at @JuanSVas.
