    As the 3rd U.S. CTO, Smith helped the President and the overall Administration harness the power of data, innovation, and technology on behalf of the American People. Her work included adding senior tech leaders to policy tables and advancing the capabilities of both government and society. Prior to her role as U.S. CTO, Smith was a Vice President at Google where she oversaw new business development globally, and later at Google[x] where her work included starting Google’s "Women Techmakers" diversity initiative. Smith is an active proponent for STEM education and innovation, as well as well as an advocate for the LGBTQ community. Smith was recently elected to membership in the National Academy of Engineering, has been listed as one of 50 of the most powerful LGBT people in the United States by Out magazine, recipient of a top 25 Women on the Web award and many others.
