Kel O'Neill

Filmmaker

Kel is a filmmaker working at the intersection of documentary, art, and technology. His last project, Empire (co-directed with partner Eline Jongsma), uses video installation and interactive documentary to explore the current-day legacy of Dutch colonialism in 10 different countries. Empire has been exhibited by such world-renowned institutions as REDCAT and the Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam, and was an official selection of the New York Film Festival, the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, and SXSW. Empire’s online manifestation won the 2nd POV Hackathon, and became one of the first interactive documentaries distributed by POV. Kel is a Webby Honoree and Nominee, and the winner of the inaugural Tim Hertherington Visionary Award. He has written for Vice, Indiewire, and PBS.org. He curates StoryCode LA and is an immersive media consultant for The Economist.
