Edward Hartwig is the deputy administrator of the United States Digital Service (USDS), a startup inside the White House founded by President Obama in the wake of the healthcare.gov recovery effort. USDS hires expert technologists with a mission to improve the services that millions of Americans rely on. Before assuming the role deputy administrator, Edward worked on projects to improve reentry outcomes for federal inmates, modernize the visa system, and build a secure, single-sign in service for the federal government. Before USDS, Edward was the strategic advisor and speechwriter for the U.S. Ambassador to Austria. He also led World Data Labs, a social impact startup focused on providing greater transparency around global poverty and health outcomes. From 2006 to 2015, Edward served as a Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State. He served in the Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, and Austria. He is the founder and former director of Elevate Entrepreneurship, a grassroots movement comprised of creatives, startup founders, investors, and public servants in Austria dedicated to supporting entrepreneurship and fostering Europe’s innovation economy. Edward began his professional career as a public defender in Massachusetts.
