Melbourne
After being on the receiving end of three redundancies from major corporations before turning 30, David Read sought a more stable career (what?) by jumping into the arts sector. He and his partner bought a performing arts venue that was on its knees and due to close, and subsequently turned it into a great success story – today The Butterfly Club is renowned internationally as an iconic cabaret venue, which has given a start to performers like Tim Minchin and Eddie Perfect. He is now co-producer of the Melbourne Cabaret Festival – now in its seventh year – that takes place 14-26 June.
