This workshop will be hosted online (Livestream) due to safety considerations, please check out the "Preparation" section on the bottom of this page. Registered participants will be notified in advance of this program with information on how to log in to the workshop.

Unlock data-driven insights with code.

Explore the intersection of coding and data with General Assembly. During our Python-focused introductory workshop, you’ll learn to harness the power of an essential programming language for data scientists and use it to drive accurate business insights. Working with real-world examples, you’ll:

  • Touch on fundamental Python programming techniques and tools.
  • Discover the history of Python and how it compares to other programming languages.
  • Discuss its applications in data analysis and the types of problems it can solve.
  • See where Python programming fits into the data workflow.
  • Apply your new skills to solve a real-world problem with Python.

Chart your own career path. Pick up where this workshop leaves off. Enhance your professional skill set with Python skills in our 10-week, part-time Data Science workshop or become job-ready with our 12-week, full-time Data Science program.

Preparation

  • Participants must have Anaconda pre-installed. Make sure you select to download Python 3.6 Graphical Installer (not Python 2.7).
  • Coding experience will come in handy, but is by no means required.
  • Optional: Install a text editor like Sublime Text 3 or Atom on your computer.
  • Technical Considerations: For participants on Windows, you’ll need Microsoft Windows 8/10 (32- or 64-bit). For those with Macs, you’ll need Mac OS X 10.8.5 or higher.
  • This class is taken completely online via Zoom and Slack.
  • You will need access to a laptop or computer with a working webcam as well as a strong internet connection.
  • Course set up information will be emailed to all students signed up around 24 hours before (and again an hour before) the course launches.

Principal Data Scientist

Curiosity and enquiry has helped Jesús (better known as J) follow a winding path that has passed from physics, chemistry, finance, analytics and even data journalism. He obtained a PhD at Imperial College for work on quantum atom optics and has worked in academic and research posts for Imperial College London and the University of Hertfordshire, as well as for organisations such as IBM Data Science Studio, Prudential and Dow Jones. He has published a number of academic papers and is the author of a couple of books including “Data Science and Analytics with Python”.
