About This Class

Whether you’re an entrepreneur, startup, small business, or just looking to up your media skills, this workshop will help you gain a better understanding of public relations. Focusing specifically on media relations, you'll learn how to develop a PR strategy that actually returns value for your business, how to find the most enticing stories for the journalists and how to build relationships with them. You'll dig into the detail of pitching including practical dos and don'ts and how to maximise your chances of getting coverage. You'll also learn how other tactics can help - from speaking opportunities to events and stunts. You will practice these skills in-class with practical applications of what you’ve learned that you can take home and put into action immediately.

  • How to find, craft and sell news worthy topics to the media
  • Differences between various media options such as, earned, paid, and social with a focus on earned media and tactics
  • About how the media machine works - why things get covered, why other things don’t, how to branch out to get multiple points of - coverage in television, radio, print, and online, and how to think creatively to gain PR opportunities
  • How to build a strategic PR campaign to include other buzz worthy efforts like events and partnership opportunities

Prereqs & Preparation

Students who will benefit the most from this class will already possess good to advanced oral and written communications skills, a basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, and follow the broad news and social media regularly.

About the Instructor

PR Consultant

Nicole Green is a PR consultant and part-time journalist. She recently co-founded Bambosh, a communications consultancy that brings together traditional media relations, content creation and digital strategy to help entrepreneurial businesses start and grow. She is currently working with early stage technology start-ups Provenance and Corner Drop and food brand Atlantic Kitchen. She has previously worked with some of the most interesting names in British enterprise – from Dragons’ Den’s Peter Jones to Ella’s Kitchen’s Paul Lindley. She led the global media campaign for youth charity One Young World and was part of the team behind the government’s StartUp Britain campaign.
