This workshop covers the fundamentals of typography for the novice designer and other professionals, with an emphasis on web and mobile app executions; therefore, the concepts covered will address readability and legibility concerns of screen-based type.

Typographic concepts will be examined at three levels of granularity: that of the letterform, the sentence, and the paragraph. At the level of the letterform, a common typographic vocabulary will be introduced. Concepts to be covered include the definition of glyphs, understanding the difference between typefaces and fonts, basic typographic anatomy, and standard typographic classifications. The application of the typographic principles, i.e, size, weight, style, and placement, to create hierarchy will be introduced when examining type at the sentence level. Finally, at the level of the paragraph, advanced concepts to include line length, line height, and paragraph spacing will be discussed alongside common typographic sins and virtues.

The workshop will with an overview of advanced typographic concepts as they pertain to the web: custom typography, cloud-based type, and where to source quality typefaces.
