About this workshop

The day will be broken into segments, each featuring a new JavaScript feature. We start with an in depth explanation of that feature and follow with hands on exercises to cement both the value of the feature as well as your understanding. Many segments will build on each other, utilizing features you’ve learned earlier to give you the best understanding of how these features work together in the wild.

Takeaways

  • Get hands on experience with the new variable declarations “let” and “const”, and see how they improve upon the old “var” keyword.
  • Work with: arrow functions, template literals, object literals, assignment destructuring, modules, native promises, classes, maps, and new array, object and string prototype methods.
  • Learn the about the various environments that support EcmaScript 2015 including Node.js 4.0+, the Babel Transpiler, and even the latest version of most web browsers.
  • Setup your environment to allow EcmaScript 2015 code to be backwards compatible back to Internet Explorer 8.

Prereqs & Preparation

Students should have a basic understanding of JavaScript, a computer with their favorite text editor such as Sublime, Atom, and a web browser.
