You just got an unsolicited email from a recruiter who is working with a client who needs someone just like you. Congrats! Now, what’s next? Ignore them because your past experience with another recruiter wasn't great? What if that was your dream job? If you don't answer, you’ll never know…
No one ever teaches you how to work with recruiters. And everyone has a story about dealing with a nightmare recruiter. But is that worth throwing away possible job opportunity? Even if you have a good relationship with a recruiter or two, you likely have never been told what is expected of you and what you can expect from them. You likely don't know how they manage their client relations and how and when they get paid. In my ten years in the field, I have seen it all. I know what works and what doesn't when it comes to candidate and recruiter relationships. And I’ll answer all your questions about what you should expect, what you can’t expect and how to best get the answers you need.
Knowing more about how recruiters work, how they are paid, how they negotiate for you will allow you to decide who to work with, who to avoid and how to weight their advice. You will come away empowered to control your recruiter relationships, able to communicate effectively in a way that will get you the answers you need and allows you to successfully leverage those relationships to get into the companies where you want to work.
