About this class series

Though it doesn't make headlines as often as some other programming languages, Java is one of the most widely used; in 2012, TIOBE ranked it as the #1 language (handily beating out a number of other languages like C++, Python, and Ruby) in terms of market share growth.

This hands-on, two-part class is an introductory lesson in Java programming, geared towards beginning software developers and experienced software developers who are new to Java.

Takeaways

  • Setup Java development environment
  • Understand basic Java constructs (simple data structures, control-flow, how to run a program)
  • Take a simple, plain English description of an algorithm and translate it into code

Prereqs & Preparation

While there are no formal prerequisites, some programming experience is recommended.

Students should bring a laptop to each session.
