Ingrid Van der Wacht : What a design festival can do for cities and culture

Ingrid will talk about how design festivals can bring positive transformation to a city. It's the contagious energy coming from a community of designers, design institutions, design driven organisations and design fans that build a platform, that open doors, that engage people. Because of her work for Dutch Design Foundation, the organization that organizes each year the renowned Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, former factory town of Philips Electronics, Ingrid will particularly zoom in on Dutch design and how it tries to contribute to solving global societal challenges we have in common.

Ingrid is an independent project manager and concept developer in an (inter)national context. Since 2005 the focus of her work is on initiating projects for change, innovation and development through and with design and creativity. She collaborates with a broad variety of partners in the design sector, industry, public sector, knowledge institutes and designers on different levels: from (inter)national. She is the international project manager for Dutch Design Foundation, the organizer of Dutch Design Week, Dutch Design Awards and many other design innovation related projects, and was the project manager and developer for PROUD Europe (People Researchers Organisations Using Design for co creation and innovation) and work on development of new projects that build on its legacy.

Jennifer Bonner Born in Alabama, Jennifer Bonner founded MALL, a creative practice for art and architecture, in 2009. MALL stands for Mass Architectural Loopty Loops or Maximum Arches with Limited Liability—an acronym with built-in flexibility. By engaging “ordinary architecture” such as gableroofs and everyday materials, Bonner playfully reimagines architecture in her field.

Jennifer’s project that will be featured on the 2019 MA! Architecture Tour, Haus Gables, is a new ground-up residential project designed and developed by Atlanta and Boston-based architectural designer Jennifer Bonner, director of MALL. Located in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood of Atlanta, the 2,200-square-foot home is one of only two residences in the country made of cross-laminated timber (CLT), an exceptionally strong wood material produced by gluing together layers of lumber that alternate in direction. The house, which takes its form from a cluster of six gable roofs, also features a series of faux-finishes that clad the exterior and parts of the interior in opposition to expectations.

Catherine Bedford of Dashel Helmets – designer Catherine Bedford A former accessories designer and product developer who has worked with brands including Nike, Sony and fashion titan LVMH — coveted a helmet that would protect the head but also wouldn’t look mismatched when paired with an outfit straight off Net-a-Porter. She is now the founder of Dashel, creators of urban cycle helmets with a ground-breaking difference; they are designed and made in the UK using innovative materials, to ensure that they are lightweight, slim and long-lasting.
