About This Class

*Please note this class will be at 1776 in Crystal City - 2231 Crystal Dr #1000, Arlington, VA 22202

HTML and CSS are the fundamental building blocks of the web. Whether you're a beginner who wants to get started in web development, a designer looking to hand-code their concepts, or a marketer who wants a little more control over their CMS, you'll need to know HTML and CSS to get the job done!

In this hands-on introductory workshop, we’ll learn about the web development community and how the web works. We’ll go over key coding terminology and principles, introduce languages like HTML and CSS, discuss what their functions are and how they work together, then use that new knowledge to write our own code and develop a simple site.

Students should be familiar with the basic functions of their computer, such as launching programs, creating folders, copying and pasting objects, formatting text, finding and saving files.

Takeaways

  • Gain an overview of the web development landscape and where HTML/CSS fits in the web ecosystem.
  • Describe the difference between front-end and back-end code and the basic components of HTML, CSS, and Javascript
  • Use HTML and CSS to mark up a basic webpage.
  • Describe the different jobs that use coding or benefit from an understanding of HTML/CSS.

Prereqs & Preparation

A laptop is required for this workshop. For those on Windows, you’ll need Microsoft Windows 7/8/10 (32- or 64-bit). For those with Macs, you’ll need the Mac OS X 10.8.5 or higher, up to 10.11.4 (El Capitan). Upgrade your operating system before class, if needed.
