Step into mobile development with General Assembly. During our Android-focused introductory workshop, take a closer look at the world’s most popular mobile operating system and learn about the processes and tools that bring successful apps to life. Whether you have an idea for an app or are simply curious about opportunities in the field, you’ll:

  • Explore history and trends in Android development.
  • Learn to identify the basic Views, or user interface components, of an Android App.
  • Find out about the skills Android developers leverage to succeed in their careers.
  • Apply what you’ve learned to create a two-screen app.

Prereqs & Preparation

A laptop for this workshop. For those on Windows, you’ll need Microsoft Windows 7/8/10 (32- or 64-bit). For those with Macs, you’ll need the Mac OS X 10.8.5 or higher, up to 10.11.4 (El Capitan). Upgrade your operating system before class, if needed. Download Java Development Kit (Install this first. Choose the correct link for your operating system in the Java SE Development Kit 8u92 section). Download Android Studio. Install Emulator in Android Studio. Basic technical aptitude and orientation to computers, and curiosity to learn new tools.

Mark is a senior Android engineer at a Denver company with a major consumer application in the medical vertical that has over five million downloads from the Google Play store. He is also President of Digital Construction, a technology consulting firm focused on Android, and the author of "Software Development For Google Glass," the first book written about Glass programming after the upgrade to KitKat in XE16.

Mark has given a seminar in Hong Kong and a Keynote in Paris. In the fourth quarter of 2016 you can find him speaking in Denver, Dallas, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
