Much of the data that we need to analyze is stored in databases. SQL is a powerful but reasonably simple tool for retrieving data from databases. Students will access large real world databases and retrieve the data they want.

Takeaways

  • Understand the way data is organized in large databases and data warehouses
  • Combine data from more than one table
  • Group, count and sum data
  • Control what is data is returned from the database to filter to just what you need

Prereqs & Preparation

  • Students should bring a laptop to be able to access databases and learn with the hands on exercises in class
  • Students will need to create a Google developers account prior to class. This is a simple thing to do and instructions will be sent out prior to class.
