How a GA alum is paying it forward in tech

    General Assembly
    February 12, 2025

Breaking into tech can feel like stepping into the unknown. But for Roydon Jeffrey, a former tax preparer turned software engineer, the decision to enroll in General Assembly’s Software Engineering Bootcamp (the artist formerly known as Web Development Immersive back in 2015) was a game-changer—one he’s never regretted.

Watch our full interview with Roydon, or keep reading for a recap.

From tax returns to code reviews

Before joining GA, Roydon was deep in the world of accounting. But the moment he discovered software engineering, everything changed. The Software Engineering Bootcamp at GA gave him the skills, the support, and the environment to go all-in.

    And that investment paid off.

Today, Roydon isn’t just thriving in his tech career—he’s actively giving back. As a co-founder of a tech company, he and his partner Taj (also a GA alum) now return to GA to hire new talent. Why? Because they know firsthand what GA grads bring to the table.

    Why GA grads stand out

For Roydon and Taj, hiring from GA isn’t just about sourcing top talent—it’s about paying it forward.

“We know the commitment it takes to go through a program like GA,” Roydon explains. “GA creates an environment where students are fully dedicated, and that dedication shows in their work. What you put in is what you get out.”

Over the years, they’ve seen GA consistently produce job-ready grads who are passionate, hardworking, and committed to building a career in tech. It was a no-brainer for them to return to the same community that helped launch their own careers.

    Was GA worth it? Absolutely.

When asked if General Assembly was worth it, Roydon didn’t hesitate.

“One of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life.”

He wishes he had discovered coding sooner, but he’s beyond grateful for the experience he had at GA. Now, he’s making sure other aspiring engineers have the same opportunities he did.

    Paying it forward

Success in tech isn’t just about getting your foot in the door—it’s about creating opportunities for others to do the same. By hiring GA grads, Roydon and Taj are doing just that.

For anyone considering a career switch, Roydon’s story is proof that with the right training, community, and commitment, anything is possible. And with GA, you won’t be making the journey alone.

Whether you’re an individual looking to pivot into a coding career, or a business in need of tech training and talent solutions, we’re with you every step of the way until you reach your goal—and then after that, too.
