    Matt Gray

    Director of Product, Zipcar

    Boston

Before Matt got into product management, he bagged groceries, made bagel sandwiches, delivered mail, cleaned dishes, sold antiques, tutored students, performed survey research, manufactured underwater cameras, performed statistical analyses at a hospital, ran a photographic archiving service, and implemented database systems. Somewhere in there Matt got a degree in Quantitative Sociology. Matt got most interested in product management while working as a data scientist at an ed tech startup, helping the startup grow by using product data to run A/B tests and experiments. He found it exciting to solve complex technical problems and develop software following Agile patterns. He went on to help companies grow through product innovation such as Localytics (mobile app analytics and marketing) and TetraScience (lab data management platform). Given that both of those organizations were resource-strapped startups, Matt also had responsibilities in customer success, UX, user research, customer support, and sales operations. Matt is now Director of Product at Zipcar. At Zipcar, Matt splits his time between two primary areas: 1) helping his team of PMs to be successful, 2) deeply understanding users and their problems, and collaboratively solving those problems with UX, engineering, and business stakeholders.
