Hugh Wilson is a data scientist at Square in Melbourne. He received his PhD in physics working on quantum computing at the University of Sydney, then moved to California where he worked on developing new methods for nanoscale semiconductor metrology. After four years working with computational statistical mechanics to study the chemistry of the deep interior of Jupiter and Saturn at the University of California Berkeley, he returned to Australia to take up a position at CSIRO/Data61, applying data science methods to predict atomic-scale structures of materials and nanostructures. Transitioning into industry, he worked a stint in one of Australia's largest hedge funds before taking up a position at Square, where he now works on using data science methods to fight fraud and change the way the world uses money.
