New York City
Conrad Rushing is the Director of Engineering at Tumblr. He got his first computer in California in 1989, a Mac SE, and hacked it all through middle and high school. He was studying to be an art historian at Stanford, but got disillusioned by the business of academia. When he graduated in 2000, he found himself in the thick of the dot-com bubble. Having hacked some HTML and Flash for clients in college, he started work as a web designer at a small firm in Boulder, CO. Once the crash came in 2001, he was laid off like everyone else, and wound up in Tampa, FL hustling small business websites. After a decade of teaching himself more and more and coding along the way he helped to start a company called LocalHero, a social-local-mobile matchmaker service based in Prague. When that folded in 2012, he was done also with being an expatriate and came back to NYC, where Tumblr hired him on as an engineer. He now leads a multi-team directorate there as Tumblr’s Director of Engineering.
