At the age of 15 Adrian fell in love with barbering when a barbershop open next to his home in the Caribbean island of St Lucia. He quickly befriended the barber, Ryan Evans and soon started an apprenticeship cleaning the salon and observing the craft. At an early age Adrian realized a great haircut experience was not only about providing a good haircut but genuinely caring about the client needs, providing a listening ear while creating a relaxed and comfortable environment.
`Three years later he moved to New York City with the expectation of opening his own salon but he soon realized that it would take a lot more work and sacrifice then he previously imagined. He worked his way up by building relationships and a clientele along the way. Nine years later he opened Adrian Fanus Grooming in the Clinton Hills Sections of Brooklyn at the hight of the recession and against the advice of many people who assumed the business would fail.
Adrian’s philosophy have been influenced by the Romans. " If you build it they will come ". He realized over the years of working at a few other shops that there was a demographic of men and women who were not comfortable coming to the barbershops because of their sexuality and the machoism, lack of professionalism and ego of the barbershop culture further pushed them away. He vowed to change that and create a business that was professional, inclusive, and nonjudgemental. " People are coming for a great grooming experience and their personal lifestyle has nothing to do with anyone else", Adrian often says.
Adrian Fanus client list has included Academy Award Forrest Whitaker, actor Idris Elba, Chris Brown, John Legend and sports greats Grant Hill, and Nate Robinson just to name a few. Adrian's work has also been featured on the silver screen, top television shows and the most prominent fashion and lifestyle magazines.
