In the future — or so some people think — it will be possible to upload your consciousness into a computer, creating software emulations of human brains, or “ems”. What will it look like if and when they take over the economy and world?
Join us for an evening with author Robin Hanson as he talks about his new book The Age of Em: Work, Life and Love When Robots Rule the Earth. Hanson applies consensus science from many fields to construct a detailed picture of a future ruled by a certain kind of smart robot. Short for “brain emulation”, an “em” is a result of taking a particular human brain and scanning it to record its particular cell features and connections, then building a computer model that processes signals the exact same way.
The picture Hanson paints is encyclopedic in scope, including mind speeds, body sizes, labor markets, career paths, friendships, aging, reproduction, conversation, wealth, law, war, and death. Join us as he discusses the complex ideas in his book, and answers your questions.
