About This Event

OVERVIEW: About 1 in 3 Americans is currently freelancing or a small business owner. By 2020, they estimate that number will grow to 40%. THAT'S INSANE! AND AMAZING!

It's becoming easier than ever to start your own business and work for yourself. But the idea of giving up a steady paycheck, retirement benefits, and health insurance can be completely daunting.

The good news is that most successful freelancers and entrepreneurs don't just up and quit one day. They take their time to build a foundation for their business and personal finances before they leave their day jobs, and you can too.

WHAT YOU'LL TAKE AWAY:

  • Start diversifying your income and exploring your skills with side hustle ideas
  • Categorize your skills and talents and identify potential income streams and customers/clients
  • Calculate how much you need to have saved to take the leap
  • Put together 12-month cash flow projections to create measurable and concrete goals for how to financially transition to freelancing full time
  • Determine the best business entity to set up as your business grows
  • Separate your business and personal expenses and manage your self employment taxes
  • Get the right insurance in place
  • Pitch your business idea to your target market

About the Instructors

Pam Capalad Photo

Founder & Financial Planner,
Brunch & Budget

Hey, I’m Pamela Capalad. I’m a Certified Financial Planner™ and I’ve been in the financial services industry for over 8 years, and spent a lot of those years at wealth management firms (if you’re really curious where, check out my LinkedIn). I'm the owner of Brunch & Budget, where we have a meal and talk about your finances. I'm based in Brooklyn, NY and serve clients virtually across the country.

I'm here to help you get to that place in your life. You know that place. That place where you close your eyes and feel perfectly at peace and energized all at the same time. That place where you know you’re at your best, that you were somehow built for this, this thing you’re doing that you can’t believe you get to spend your life doing.

Life isn’t about cringing every time you run your credit card through a cash register or dodging calls from bill collectors. It’s not about the next paycheck, next rent check, next job, next in line. Life is about finding your why.

So here’s the deal – you have the why, I have the how. Whenever you're ready, I'll be here to help you figure out how to get there.

I'm from St Croix, USVI, but have been all up in Brooklyn for a while now. I've been a part of the NYC Indie Hip Hop scene since the early 00’s. I've toured the country and the world as myself, and with bands MINDSpray & Deathrow Tull. I've rapped at weddings, schools, prisons, sides of busses, store windows (whattup Chashama!), and most street corners you've seen.

I should probably give a lil background on the theater part. I moved to the states to be an actor. As a mixed race Caribbean kid, I had trouble figuring out where to find roles that i felt comfortable playing. I started writing for myself and others by turning my music into plays. I was a member of the Public Theater's Emerging Writers Group and I've acted and collaborated in indie shows at all the requisite festivals, played the Green Show at OSF, and had readings at the Ohio Theater. I've rocked a number of theaterings with Subjective, Company Cypher, and the National Black Theater.

Every piece I create ends up having an educational component. It's the 'each one teach one' part of Hip Hop. I'm always looking to build avenues of learning from the moments of clarity that great performances can bring us. I've been piloting my ed programs back home in St. Croix and just finished a tour of Hip Hop & Finance workshops on the West Coast. Oh yeah, I also have a weekly podcast about those on Bondfire Radio.
