About this workshop

Javascript is the current and increasingly default language of choice for building web and mobile applications. Meteor is an open source full-stack platform built on Javascript which enables anyone to build their own app or MVP as quickly as possible. By being a full-stack platform, Meteor removes the necessity and complexity of learning many different technologies and then understanding how to connect everything together.

This practical class introduces you to Meteor.js and the concepts behind it. By the end of the class you will have built a small working real-time Meteor web application.

Takeaways

  • Learn how to install the Meteor development platform (if not complete already)
  • Become familiar with the Meteor package system for third-party library features
  • Understand the main concepts behind a Meteor application
  • Follow and build a working real-time web application in Meteor
  • Deploy a Meteor application

Prereqs & Preparation

A laptop with at least 4 GB of RAM and a recent operating system. Meteor installed (preferably v1.2+) (instructions here). Typing ‘meteor –v’ after installation should return the version number installed. A text editor you’re comfortable with installed on your system. If you don’t have one installed then the free ‘Atom’ is recommended (instructions ). Basic skills in HTML, CSS, and a little JavaScript would be beneficial.
