General Assembly

ABOUT GENERAL ASSEMBLY

General Assembly is a campus for technology, design, and entrepreneurship. We provide educational programming, space, and support to facilitate collaborative practices and learning opportunities across a community inspired by the entrepreneurial experience.

our mission

New York is in the midst of a new era of dramatic growth in the startup sector. Over the past two decades the technology enabling the creation of online products has become cheaper and more effective, democratizing entrepreneurship. At the same time, design plays an increasingly important role in the creation of intuitive and differentiated user experiences. New York is becoming a nexus for the cross-pollination of ideas and for utilizing technology and design to disrupt industry and culture.

Despite this shift, starting a successful business is still extraordinarily difficult, suffering from a steep learning curve. Thus, we are crafting a community to provide the necessary support, infrastructure, and educational framework for aspiring entrepreneurs to start new ventures.

We’ve created a multi-faceted campus to serve the needs of high-potential entrepreneurs and advance the startup ecosystem in New York. Our community not only has a place in which to collaborate, but also take advantage of a new kind of learning-by-doing. Through our curriculum, entrepreneurs will receive a pragmatic and multi-disciplinary education at the intersection of technology, design, and entrepreneurship.

Programming is open to the public, so sign up and try out a class or two. View our list of upcoming Classes or Events.

2. Communal Membership

Communal members are at the core of General Assembly. Unlike those who participate only in our programming, communal members have 24/7 access to the campus. Communal members include serial entrepreneurs at the earliest stages of their next ventures, top-tier investors, designers, and developers.

We accept applications on a quarterly deadline basis (much like applying to a university). The next deadline is May 15, 2012.

You can find out more information and apply here.

3. Dedicated Membership

In addition to their membership in the General Assembly community, dedicated members work full-time out of our space from reserved desks, and are admitted by invitation only. Dedicated members represent the most promising startups in New York and participate in the community by teaching classes, attending events, and working closely with our partners.
