About this class

In this workshop we will bring open data to life through colors, shapes, maps, and context under the lens of business and nonprofit use cases. During our time together, we will will learn how to access, visualize, and analyze publicly available data through free online tools, specifically Socrata, Esri ArcGIS Online, Google Maps, and Mapbox. Workshop participants will learn general best practices in cleaning data and putting it through typical workflows and treatments.

● Explore and identify datasets representing information you care about within regional open data portals
● Filter, group, and summarize open datasets

● Connect Google Sheets data with Esri AcrGIS
● Learn basic concepts, like points, lines, polygons, file types
● Explore more advanced functionality like how to export data via APIs
and GeoJSON, embedding maps in third-party or personal websites, and working with custom boundaries

Prereqs & Preparation

This is a beginner-to-intermediate level course. To get the most out of our time together, participants should be familiar with navigating the internet and Excel basics. Everyone should bring their own laptop, notebook and pen.
