About This Workshop

Are you a UX designer looking to expand your skill set? Maybe you are someone with no design experience but interested in visual design as a potential career? Want to make your company newsletter look less terrible?

This bootcamp is for anyone who wants to understand how to make beautiful and (most importantly) effective digital designs.

Visual design is more than simply being able to make something look “nice.” Good designers understand how to use the principles of design and human visual perception to communicate effectively with their target audience — to inspire them, encourage them to buy something, engage with a community, etc.

In the first part of this bootcamp, we’ll be learning the basic stages of the design process (research, ideation, wireframing, design) and design theory fundamentals (color, composition, and typography). Then, you’ll get to practice applying these new skills through in-class activities, and have the opportunity to iterate on and improve your designs through critique.

Takeaways

  • Understand the value of design and the design process
  • Be familiar with key stages of the visual design process from research to final mockup
  • Understand how to apply design fundamentals (composition, typography, color)
  • Experience with giving, receiving, and applying design feedback
  • Practice using industry software (Sketch)
  • Leave with in-class projects that showcase new skills

Preparation

All levels welcome, but this class will be geared towards those with no previous experience in visual / graphic design.

Just come with a Mac laptop and a trial of Sketch downloaded and ready to go: https://www.sketchapp.com. (PCs unfortunately do not support Sketch at this time — if you’d like to attend this Bootcamp with a PC and have some familiarity with Adobe Illustrator, please let us know and we can work to accommodate you!)

About the Instructor

Susannah Hainley Photo

Art Director & Designer

Susannah is an art director and designer who leverages design and other forms of graphic storytelling to engage people around complex topics. Since moving to San Francisco in 2017, she has partnered with food, nonprofit, and start-up clients on a range of projects including digital products, print collateral, pitch decks, brand identities, infographics, and more.

Susannah has always believed in the power of design as a tool for change. As the Senior Designer at the firm Red Rooster Group, she helped nonprofits increase their reach through effective brand strategy and design. Later, she was proud to help fund important journalism as part of a digital advertising revolution at The New York Times. As the Senior Art Director of T Brand Studio, the Times’s branded content studio, she oversaw the creation of hundreds of best-in-class brand stories which earned T Brand “Hottest in Native Advertising” from Adweek in 2015 and 2016. It was there that she honed her skills in digital interactive design, UX, and data visualization and worked with clients like Google, Nest, Ford, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Capital One, and more.

In addition to teaching a variety of visual design courses, bootcamps, and workshops at General Assembly and serving on the Product Advisory Board, Susannah is also a life-long learner and is currently in the process of obtaining her Master’s degree in Food Studies from University of the Pacific (where she is merging her passions for design and food). She is also an avid roller skater, and skated with one of the world's top roller derby leagues in NYC under the name “Bruisannah.”

In recognition of her exemplary service in the classroom, Susannah has been selected as a member of General Assembly's Distinguished Faculty program.
