About This Workshop

Are you visual thinker looking to understand more about the world of digital design? Have you been wanting to learn some of the fundamental programs and techniques that designers currently use to bring their ideas to life? The digital world is open for business, and this bootcamp will cover the essential aspects of visual design, leaving you with a deeper understanding of how effective designs are actually created, from research to final mockup. Good "design" is larger than any single platform, app or website. In this class, you'll come away with knowledge on how to creative beautiful, stand-out work that can live anywhere across the content spectrum, and drive results. Working through a series of guided demos, you'll:

  • Learn the fundamentals of Adobe Photoshop, and InDesign, go-to tools for print and digital designers.
  • Touch on essential design principles including composition, color theory, and typography.
  • Explore the basic techniques and theory behind effective UX/UI design.
  • Learn the basic stages of the digital design process (research, moodboards, ideation and prototyping).
  • Learn to create powerful designs that can be applied to any form of content: magazines, websites, marketing materials, brochures and social media

Registered participants will be notified 24 hours in advance of this program with information on how to log in to the Zoom Meeting Room and other tools you’ll need for the session. Registration for this offering will close 2 hours prior to the session start in order to allow all students ample opportunity to have the technology enabled.

Preparation

Participants will need to have a trial of both Adobe Photoshop and InDesign downloaded and ready to go. (http://www.adobe.com/downloads.html) - You will need access to a laptop or computer with a working webcam and microphone as well as a strong internet connection. - This class will be geared towards beginners, looking to get acclimated with the fundamentals of visual/graphic design. - This course will occur completely online using Zoom and Slack. - Course set up information will be emailed to all students signed up around 24 hours before (and again an hour before) your course launches.

About the Instructor

Susannah Hainley Photo

Designer & Consultant

Susannah is a San Francisco-based designer, graphic storyteller, and design educator. She believes in using design as a tool for change, a focus that started early in her career at a branding and marketing firm for nonprofits. This passion later led her to The New York Times, where she helped fund important journalism and set new digital advertising standards as senior art director for T Brand, The Times’ award-winning in-house branded content studio. Today, she leads projects for nonprofits, start-ups, and small businesses, ranging from digital and presentation design to content and brand strategy. Susannah also received her M.A. in Food Studies in 2020, and is currently merging her passion for food and design by writing and illustrating a graphic novel about birthday cake.

Susannah has been teaching visual design at GA since 2017. Since then, she has contributed to both the UX and visual design curricula and developed several design-related workshops and bootcamps; she is also a member of GA's Visual Design Product Advisory Board.

In recognition of her exemplary service in the classroom, Susannah has been selected as a member of General Assembly's Distinguished Faculty program.
