About this class

Interested in Virtual Reality, but not sure where to start? Learn about the different types of headsets, then create your own user interface, using buttons you've created for web and desktop applications.

This class is a crash-course in prototyping VR content in Unity. You'll get familiar with all the tools you'll need to make an Android VR experience, and you’ll play with the Vive, Oculus Rift and GearVR, and experience for yourself what works and what doesn't. You'll learn Unity’s powerful UI tools, and make a menu system in a 3D world. You'll experience your design in our VR headsets, and can show it off at home on an Android phone, with Google Cardboard.

Schedule for the day:

  • 10 AM - Intro to VR, and Setting up your computer
  • 10:30 - 12:30 PM - Comparing the headsets, and learning best practices
  • 12:30-1:30 PM - Lunch break
  • 1:30-4:30 PM - Creating a VR interface with Unity's UI system

Takeaways

  • Translate a UI design into a 3D virtual reality scene.
  • Learn key ideas such as VR sickness, Gaze, and Latency
  • Understand how to navigate Unity, and create your first VR space
  • Create buttons in Unity from a designed UI document, create text, and use them to create a menu.
