About this class

Basic and fundamental human factors and usability considerations are often overlooked during the design and development process.

In this class we will draw on real product design examples and encourage a collaborative hands-on approach to method application and proposed design solutions to optimise usability – whilst considering human performance and reductions in potential use errors and risks.

At the end of the workshop, students will gain an understanding of fundamental human factors/usability principles and applications to determine the safety and effectiveness of products – regardless of whether the product is in early concept, late development, or has already been released to market.

Takeaways

Students will learn:

  • The importance of human factors considerations in product design and development.
  • What to research to better understand the intended users of a proposed product.
  • How to perform a basic Task Analysis of a product.
  • How to perform a basic Use Failure Modes Effects Analysis (Risk Assessment) of a product based on the Task Analysis.
  • How to conduct a basic Usability Evaluation of a product.
  • How to best utilise the information gained from user research, Task Analysis, Risk Assessment and Usability Evaluation to optimise the usability of a product for market release.

Prereqs & Preparation

This workshop has no pre-requisites. New, existing or aspiring designers will all find this session practical and useful.
