About this class

The first step in becoming a more inclusive workplace where diversity thrives is to tackle unconscious bias: a normal, omnipresent occurrence and “mental shortcut” that our brains make in order to process information. At work, bias manifests as everything from micro-aggressions (e.g. a colleague telling an unintentionally offensive joke at the expense of a person or group) to a systematic lack of inclusion (e.g. not providing women and minorities with the same strategic, career-building feedback offered to white men, which keep those groups out of executive roles). In this experiential workshop, participants deepen their ability to rewire biases and create strategies for increasing inclusion as a team.

Participants will practice: - vulnerability and empathy, in order to enhance respect between colleagues;
- challenging personal biases, identifying the range of biases and using mindfulness to question and combat them internally;
- talking about bias with one another productively, whether experiencing them, witnessing them, or becoming aware that you’ve subjected a colleague to them;
- techniques for continuous, consistent allyship;
- brainstorming “nudge techniques”, or small changes in established processes that can make a big difference, that employees can take to push out bias and promote inclusion.

Takeaways

  • what unconscious bias is, how to recognize and begin to rewire it in themselves, and the types of experiences marginalized groups face in the workplace;
  • how to support others or stand up for oneself in the face of bias;
  • how to take actionable steps towards inclusion in the office.
