About this event

While women make up 47% of the workforce in the U.S., they comprise a relatively small share of professionals in the STEM industries. Data from the National Girls Collaborative Project shows that in 2014, only 25% of the computer and mathematical science industry is female – this figure is only 13% within the engineering industry. In order to create a more inclusive working environment, employers have been implementing a variety of strategies to increase the diversity of talent within their organizations.

Some employers have been encouraged to take action by supporting, and in some cases even giving preference to, minority candidates, in order to reduce the diversity gap in STEM. This kind of strategy was highlighted in the 2014 International Business Report, which reported that the percentage of world business leaders in favor of gender quotas has increased from 37 percent in 2013 to 45 percent in 2014.

Discussion about how such strategies should be implemented often causes questions to arise about the justness of such practices. Companies implementing diversity initiatives need to carefully manage the implementation of such policies. Businesses must be sensitive in this process and manage how the message of promoting inclusive talent is communicated to current and potential employees, to foster a welcoming and inclusive work environment.

If you are a woman working in STEM, or are a company looking to hire more diverse talent, join us at this Inclusive Talent event.
