About This Workshop

SQL is a powerful language, and tool, for data analysis and data handling. In this bootcamp, you’ll dive deep into SQL syntax and database structures, while applying your new SQL skills to address business problems. This bootcamp will take absolute beginners through the basics of SQL to an ability to write queries with confidence.

  • Understand SQL vocabulary such as tables, schema, and functions
  • Create basic SQL queries by applying Boolean logic, sorting functions, and commenting:
    • Basic SELECT-FROM-WHERE statements
    • LIMIT clauses
    • Math operations and constant expressions in SELECT statements
    • Booleans and complex conditions in the WHERE clause
    • Pattern matching in the WHERE clause
    • NULL values
    • JOIN operations
    • Grouping and aggregations
    • HAVING clauses
    • ORDER BY clauses
    • Subqueries

Prereqs & Preparation

This bootcamp is designed for anyone interested in learning SQL. A basic technical aptitude and curiosity to learn new tools will make you successful. No prior knowledge of SQL is required.

What to bring to class: All students must bring their own laptops. Please also download and install Sqlectron.

Note on installing Sqlectron: Students using Windows should download the Sqlectron-Setup-1.15.0.exe file. Students using a Mac should downloads the Sqlectron-1.15.0.dmg file. Mac users may need to allow installation of non-app-store programs in their System Preferences

About the Instructor

Data Analyst

Josh is a GA alum and a data analyst with expertise in survey research and civic engagement. He spent five years working in northern and southwest Virginia for candidates at all levels of government from Blacksburg Town Council to President. In 2013 he ran a campaign that registered over 3,000 Virginia Tech students to vote for state and local candidates and tested innovative messaging and communications tactics to persuade them to show up and make their voices heard on election day.

Today Josh is a data analyst with a top national magazine in Washington D.C., a Masters Student at Northwestern University pursuing a M.S. in Predictive Analytics, and the advocacy chair for the National Capital Area chapter of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
