About This Class Series

SQL provides powerful but reasonably simple tools for data analysis and handling. This two-part series will take absolute beginners through the basics of SQL to an ability to write queries with confidence. We will use a combination of lecture and in-class exercises to ensure that students leave with a working grasp of SQL fundamentals.

*Please note: this is a class for total beginners. Those who use(d) SQL regularly should use this course only as a refresher.

Schedule

Mar 9
Saturday, 9 March 10 am – 4 pm MST Day 1
Mar 10
Sunday, 10 March 10 am – 4 pm MDT Day 2

Preparation

Basic technical aptitude and orientation to computers, and curiosity to learn new tools. Willingness to learn about a text-based/principle driven analytic tool with little real GUI support, and determination to push through the natural frustration of confronting new concepts.

Machine Requirements: Mac users must have High Sierra or Mojave as OS. Windows users anything fairly recent (past Vista).

We will be pausing to let students run and write queries of their own, so students should bring laptops with an installed SQL implementation (MySQL, Postgres, SQL Server; Access is strongly discouraged). Instructions for installing MySQL will be distributed prior to class.

About the Instructor

Amer Tadmori Photo

Senior Statistician,
Wiland

Amer is a Senior Statistician at Wiland, where he uses data science to provide business intelligence and data-driven marketing solutions to clients. His passion for turning complex topics into easy-to-understand concepts is what led him to begin teaching at GA. Previously, he worked at TransUnion and Nielsen where he worked to translate data sets into actionable insights to solve business problems. Subsequently, Amer knows way too much about credit data and frozen lasagna.

He holds a BA in Economics from Colgate University and a Master's in Applied Statistics from Colorado State University. In his free time, Amer loves hiking his way through the National Parks and snowboarding down Colorado’s local hills.
