About this class

Each year, thousands of people in the Bay Area start learning new career skills through bootcamps, workshops, and online courses[1]. There are so many great ways to get started, but maintaining your learning goals ("self teaching") and applying them to your career is easier said than done.

People who successfully learn to code, change their career path, or launch a passion project understand the underlying principles of goal setting that often make the difference between mastering a skill and losing momentum. This workshop is about these principles and how you can integrate them into your career goals.

Students will learn the fundamentals of motivation (progress, flow, mastery, feedback, community, etc.) and how they've been used in real world situations, such as preparing for an interview with Google, learning to code on nights and weekends, or pivoting to an engineering role from a business operations role.

Students will also learn how to make the most of self-taught skills in the workplace by avoiding common pitfalls when applying for new positions or taking on new responsibility.

By the end of this class, students will be better equipped to achieve learning goals and implement self-taught skills in the workplace for long-term career advancement.

[1] Estimated by cohort size of 12-week code bootcamp programs in San Francisco, plus number of workshops per week at General Assembly.
