About this workshop

The proliferation of mobile browsing has changed the landscape of web design. Making sure sites look great and work as intended across an infinite number of screen sizes has impacted the workflow of every member of a web team.

In this class we will discuss the implications of this specifically for designers, and how sharing language and knowledge across the design and engineering teams can significantly speed up the build process. Among other things, we will talk about what responsive actually means, best practices for deciding the unit measurement, how to set up a grid in design software, what considerations designers need when choosing breakpoints, and what questions to ask developers and when.

Takeaways

  • Understand the basics of responsive layout - what is a responsive grid and how do we use it
  • The difference between responsive/adaptive/liquid and static websites
  • Best practice when deciding what unit of measurement to use - px, ems, rems etc, and how they can affect the design when in live code
  • Get a feel for possibilities when using a grid - it’s not necessarily a restraint
  • How content influences responsive decisions

Prereqs & Preparation

  • Please bring a lot of questions
  • If you like you can bring examples of websites that adapt well to various devices and screen sizes for class discussion
  • You are welcome to bring a laptop to the class but they won’t be needed for any exercises
