About This Workshop Series

Whether you have experience in programming or are looking to get started for the first time, this workshop will put you on the fast track to honing your Python skills. It is an excellent first class for an aspiring data scientist.

Across two days, we will explore basic and intermediate Python concepts with frequent hands-on practice. We will learn two Python workflows -- scripting and Jupyter Notebooks. We will also use third-party Python libraries to visualize data and scrape content from websites.

This is a very practical and hands-on workshop that has lots of class exercises. You'll build your own library of Python scripts that can be reused after your done with the course.

Prereqs & Preparation

You must bring a laptop with a text editor.

No programming experience is required. Before class, install:

(1) Anaconda with Python 2.7 (https://www.continuum.io/downloads). Anaconda is an easy-to-install free package manager, environment manager, Python distribution, and collection of over 720 open source packages offering free community support.

(2) A text editor, such as Sublime Text 3 (https://www.sublimetext.com/3).

About the Instructor

Dan Wilhelm Photo

Data Science Consultant

Dan Wilhelm independently consults in data science and software development with a focus in machine learning. He has developed four complete flagship products for three startups, from ideation to deployment, in addition to numerous solutions for companies in search, natural language processing, and machine learning. Dan teaches data science and web development at General Assembly, authored open source neural network software for Google Summer of Code, wrote a book chapter on AI, and interned at Microsoft and two national laboratories. Dan was a Dept. of Homeland Security graduate fellow, receiving an MS from Caltech in Computation and Neural Systems and a BS from Purdue University in Computer Engineering. For fun, he has performed in over 200 improv shows.
