Programming for Non-Programmers is workshop series at General Assembly designed to help non-programmers communicate more efficiently with developers or to help aspiring developers get started.

Saturday, 21 January 10 am – 5 pm PST Programming for Non-Programmers: Front-End Web Development

Basics of web apps:

We will code a website from scratch and cover the following:

HTML basics:

  • How to get set up on your own computer.
  • Use the basic content tags (headings, images, links, paragraphs).
  • Create different sections in your website (layout).

CSS basics:

  • Basic styling properties and how to connect with HTML.
  • Selectors and how the different sections of a site.

JS basics:

  • Why is JavaScript such a popular language?
  • The purpose of JavaScript and how it drives interactivity in your site
  • Foundations of thinking like a programmer

Sunday, 22 January 10 am – 5 pm PST Programming for Non-Programmers: Back-End Web Development
  • The components of a web app.
  • How to build a very simple web app using Rails or Node.js.
  • The purpose of web frameworks.
  • What is an API?
  • The purpose of databases and their major components.
  • Write a simple program that uses variables and takes user input.
  • Create a "hello world" web app and customize it.

Prereqs & Preparation

  • Please bring a laptop to class with Sublime Text downloaded.

About the Instructor

Founder,
ProfStream

Arun is a transplant from LA, and has been working with web and mobile applications for the last 5 years. Shortly after, he began working on his startup ProfStream, which connects tutors and students over the internet. Arun’s tools of the trade are HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ruby on Rails, and PHP, which he uses on a daily basis.

Arun’s true passion is teaching and empowering people, and he uses his talents to further technology education. He is currently teaching an introductory JavaScript course to the Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco to get youth interesting in programming.
