About This Workshop Series

Are you a creative or entrepreneur that wishes you could speak tech with your web development team? Maybe you wish you could code a bit yourself? Programming for Non-Programmers is workshop series at General Assembly designed to help non-programmers communicate more efficiently with developers or to help aspiring developers get started.

This class will cover the following while giving you opportunities to practice and integrate the skills you will learn. Programming basics:

  • The major components of a web
  • How the web works
  • The high-level phases of web development.

Saturday, 17 December 12 5 pm EST Session I: The Basics + Front End Web Development

Basics of web apps:

We will code a website from scratch and cover the following:

HTML basics:

  • How to get set up on your own computer.
  • Use the basic content tags (headings, images, links, paragraphs).
  • Create different sections in your website (layout).
  • Using a Responsive Design Framework (Bootstrap)

CSS basics:

  • Basic styling properties and how to connect with HTML.
  • Selectors and how the different sections of a site.

JS basics:

  • Why is JavaScript such a popular language?
  • The purpose of JavaScript and how it drives interactivity in your site
  • The core concepts of JavaScript programming.
  • Foundations of thinking like a programmer

Sunday, 18 December 12 5 pm EST Session II: Back End Web Development

JavaScript APIs, Frameworks and Server-Side (Back End) Web Development

  • What is Server-Side development and the major components.
  • The purpose of web frameworks.
  • What is an API?
  • Creating a simple “Hello World” web application that integrates with a back end web service

Prereqs & Preparation

  • Please bring a laptop to class with Sublime Text downloaded.

Hartley has 6 years of experience writing software and working with non-technical stakeholders to build products for the web. He has mentored junior engineers at various stages of their career, and also has a tech blog where he writes about web, tech and product related topics. Earlier in his career, he was an inbound marketer at HubSpot.
